What is Amazon SQS, and how is a single message handled?
Answer out loud or in your head first, then compare.
Answer
SQS is a managed message queue in AWS. A program sends it information about a job. Another program receives the message, does the work and, on success, deletes it from the queue. SQS stores the messages; the business code runs in the consumer, e.g. a Lambda or a program running in ECS.
While it's being processed, the message is usually hidden from further reads for a while. If the program doesn't delete it, it can come back for processing. So a successful database write and the acknowledgement in the queue are two separate steps, and a failure can happen between them. You need to be ready for repeats.
Why it matters: Connects the concept of a queue with a specific AWS service.
Possible follow-ups: What is the visibility timeout for, and what if it turns out too short?
How did it go? Be honest — “Not yet” puts the question on your review list.
