Answer
Cloudflare is a platform of services for delivering, protecting and running web applications. Among other things, it can speed up file delivery, handle DNS, filter traffic and run code in Workers. It's more than just a CDN.
Example: a user opens a page and gets some of the files from a nearby Cloudflare location. A separate Worker can inspect the request and perform a redirect. Meanwhile, the app's data can still live in another cloud. Cloudflare doesn't automatically replace the backend, the database and all the security rules — it depends which of its services we use.
Why it matters: Cloudflare is a significant part of your CV, so it's worth starting with a clear explanation of the platform.
Possible follow-ups: How do Workers differ from just caching files?
