pg_dump, pg_dumpall and pg_basebackup
Answer out loud or in your head first, then compare.
Answer
pg_dump creates a logical backup of one database. pg_dumpall covers all databases and global objects, e.g. roles. pg_basebackup creates a physical copy of the cluster.
In practice: a logical backup gives flexibility to restore selected objects; a physical one is useful for the whole cluster and in a WAL-based recovery strategy.
To be precise: PITR, i.e. restoring to a chosen point in time, needs a suitable base backup and a continuous WAL archive. A dump file alone doesn't give you that.
Pitfall: replication doesn't replace backups — it can replicate an accidental delete. You have to test the restore procedure, not just check that a file was created.
